Easy Fruit Salad -- Macedonia

There's nothing sweeter or more simple than an easy fruit salad, or Macedonia, one of the most popular desserts in all of Italy. It appears in homes and on restaurant menus across the country.

fruit salad It's best to use fresh, seasonal items for this fruit recipe as that will make the flavors really shine!

Serves 4 - 6

Ingredients

  • juice of 1 lemon
  • juice of 3 large oranges
  • 2 peaches
  • 4 red plums
  • 3/4 cup red or green grapes
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 1 apple
  • 1 banana
  • any other seasonal fruit you wish to add!
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp maraschino, kirsh or other liqueur (optional)
  • Pour the fruit juices into a large bowl.

Wash and prepare all the fruits. Peel those you wish to use without skin. Cut, slice or cube the fruit in any way you wish so that they are in bite-size pieces. (You should leave any small berries whole, and you may want to slice grapes in half)

When you are done preparing each fruit, add it to the bowl of juices.

Sprinkle with sugar and liqueur (if using), and toss the salad. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2-3 hours before serving. This will allow the sugar to penetrate the fruits and make the salad juicy and sweet. Serve with zabaglione or vanilla ice cream, or simply serve this sweet treat alone!
