Coffee Granita & Lemon Ice Recipe

lemon ice recipe, lemon slices

This lemon ice recipe- or as the Italians refer to it, granita di limone, is a popular frozen treat in Italy. Along with lemon, coffee is one of the most widely seen flavors. This page provides recipes for both versions, choose your favorite or try both!

Serves 4-5

Lemon Version

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • juice of 2 large lemons
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • Coffee Version

    Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup strong espresso, cooled
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • whipped cream (optional)
  • Heat the water and sugar together in a small saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring the liquid to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool.

Combine lemon juice and zest (or coffee) with the sugar syrup. Poor into a shallow container (like a pie dish) and freeze until solid.

To loosen, place the bottom of the container in a pool of shallow hot water for a few seconds. Turn it upside down onto a cutting board and chop into large pieces.

Place the pieces into a food processor or blender (I love my KitchenAid 7-Cup Food Processor with Mini Bowl) and mix until chopped into small chunks. Spoon into serving glasses or pour back into a container and freeze until it is time to be served. Allow to thaw slightly before serving.

Top the coffee granita with whipped cream, and garnish the lemon version with a strip of lemon peel.

    Buon appetito!
